Theoretical Framework

I believe that student’s best learn when they are exposed to different teaching techniques. This includes a mixture of visual, verbal, and hands on teaching. Students also learn best with the incorporation of technology such as computers. I feel the best way to communicate with students is to befriend them and be as kind as possible.
I believe all students have different learning characteristics and the best way to assess them is to incorporate all the learning styles. Students shouldn’t have the same expectations and with that being said all students shouldn’t be taught the same way. The best way is to incorporate all learning styles to reach all the students.
I am not sure what my learning style is at this point, mainly because I haven’t had the chance to interact in a classroom much. I hope to find out soon what it is so I can work on it and really capitalize on it. I am very adaptable so hopefully I can adapt to my student’s needs quickly. I will learn how each student learns and try my best to help each student as much as I possibly can.
I feel that technology will have a dominant role in my teaching style. I will use technology to teach the students and to help them since they are part of the digital generation. I am very comfortable with technology and very adaptable to the technological advances. I think technology fits into the students learning styles because they are comfortable with technology since they have been raised with technology.
My multiple intelligence strengths are Kinesthetic, Naturalistic, Intrapersonal, and Interpersonal. My multiple intelligence weaknesses are Musical, Linguistic, and logical. Visual/Spatial is in between.  I believe the test was fairly accurate because most of my strengths and weaknesses are true about me.

  1. Since you are so tech trained applying it in your classroom should come easy. Your education has included it and you will have those examples to draw from when using it in your classroom. Your age is a factor too. You have grown up adapting to all the gadgets that are out there and can use that foundation to understand whatever new technology is developed.
Considering Gardner's theory, if students are having trouble understanding, tech options would be another resource to try. Like you, my goal is to reach every child on their level to help them comprehend material.
Using all the learning styles seems like a great way to keep the class alive and experiencing their education rather than using the same methods repeatedly.

  2. Kyle,
I agree that all students learn so differently! To teach one way would be hard for everyone to absorb it. However, I was discussing this another professor at school and she said that the older people get even if they are kinesthetic learners, they have adapted other learning styles. As students get older, they are usually faced with audio or visual learning as about their only choices. How often at the college level have you had a hands on project? (Minus science or lab classes). Hardly ever, I would imagine.
In response to you not knowing what your teaching style is- have you considered being a substitute teacher? It is a really great way to get in "practice" classroom time. I actually had a different major and was working as a substitute teacher and realized that I loved teaching. Granted, being a sub is a little different but the general idea is there.
I also felt the muliple intelligences quiz was very accurate!

  3. Befriended the students can go one of two ways. Awesomely or awfully. I hope when you befriend your students it goes awesomely. I suppose it depends on the age group. You are absolutely right about kids needing different learning styles to be addressed. I wish my teachers growing up would have spent more time realizing my learning style or made me more aware that it was possible to have a different learning style so I could have gotten more out of elementary and high school.
